Quantum Computing and Encryption

Gurpreet Thathy, Valkyrie’s Director of Cyber Security and Electronic Countermeasures, was featured in Paul Cochrane’s latest article for Fraud Intelligence – Break Point – Encryption Post Quantum. In this article, Paul and the experts discuss the critical impact of quantum computing on encryption, which could potentially render existing methods of security, obsolete.

Gurpreet Thathy highlights the urgent need for quantum-safe encryption methods to future proof our security: “The arrival of quantum computing isn’t a future scenario – it’s happening now. We must prepare for a world where traditional encryption is obsolete. The need for quantum-resistant algorithms is more urgent than ever.”

Key Points:

  • Exponential Computing Power: Quantum computers can solve complex problems at speeds unimaginable with classical computers, rendering current encryption methods vulnerable.
  • Potential for Misuse: If quantum computing technology is exploited by malicious actors, the implications for data security and fraud prevention could be dire.
  • Immediate Action Required: Gurpreet Thathy stresses the necessity for organisations to transition to quantum-safe encryption to protect sensitive information in this new era.

What is Quantum Computing? It is a new type of computing that uses the unique properties of tiny particles to solve very complex problems quickly. While regular computers use bits (tiny switches that can be either on or off) to perform calculations, quantum computers use qubits, which can be both on and off at the same time. This allows quantum computers to explore many solutions simultaneously. Additionally, qubits can be linked together in a special way, enabling them to work together more efficiently. These features allow quantum computers to handle much more complex tasks than regular computers.
