WhatsApp Leak

It has been widely reported in the last few days that WhatsApp data containing approx. 500 million WhatsApp records has been leaked and is up for sale online, in what ‘could’ be one of the most serious modern data breaches. The breach allegedly contains WhatsApp user data from around 84 countries, including over 32 million US and 11 million UK records.

VALKYRIE (GB) LIMITED are part of this forum on the dark web and are monitoring developments closely to see how it evolves. As you can see from the screen capture in the associated image, we are using the TOR browser to visit the .onion website. The Tor Browser hides your IP address and browsing activity by redirecting web traffic through a series of different routers and allows you to access websites which are not typically indexed by your traditional search engines.

While Meta continue to investigate the issue who at present have found no evidence a data breach has occurred on the WhatsApp servers, Valkyrie would like to highlight the potential threats if a breach has occurred.

Attackers are most likely to use the information for phishing, vishing or smishing, so we recommend that all WhatsApp users are suspicious of any calls or messages they receive from unknown numbers. If in doubt, hang up. Don’t feel pressured by the user on the other end.
