Valkyrie

The word Valkyrie has been used for many things since its original meaning during Norse mythology. Valkyrie, also spelled Walkyrie, Old Norse Valkyrja (“Chooser of the Slain”), in Norse mythology, are a group of maidens who served the god Odin and were sent by him to the battlefields to choose the slain who were worthy of a place in Valhalla. These foreboders of war rode to the battlefield on horses, wearing helmets and shields.

Operation Valkyrie or the ‘July Plot’, was an abortive attempt on July 20, 1944, by German military leaders to assassinate Adolf Hitler, seize control of the government, and seek more favourable peace terms from the Allies.

Valkyrie is a 2008 thriller and is set in Nazi Germany during World War II and depicts the 20 July plot in 1944 by German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler and to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency plan to take control of the country. The film stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the key plotters.
