On a recent Technical-Surveillance-Counter-Measures (TSCM) inspection the client had a keen interest in knowing what we doing during the sweep and how we went about it. So, our Director of Cyber Security and Electronic Counter Measures, Gurpreet Thathy provided him with a brief and then showed him what each piece of equipment is for and capable of. The client was particularly interested in the ‘spectrum analyser’ we have, the OSCOR Green. The OSCOR is designed to detect illicit signals, perform site surveys for communication systems, conduct radio frequency (RF) emissions analysis, and investigate misuse of the RF spectrum – it can sweep quickly detecting transmitting electronic surveillance devices and ensure spectrum activity is captured. Gurpreet spoke to him about the different radio frequencies, what they mean, how we analyse each of the frequencies and what threats there could potentially be. We also test the electronic wiring within the premises to ensure we cover everything. The AC mains powerlines pick up RF transmissions from outside the building, indicating unfiltered powerlines. Sensitive information from computer systems can be transmitted via these power cables and received externally. A hostile actor could target the office using directional antennas and receiver equipment from a neighbouring building. The protection efforts for this threat are called emission-security (EMSEC). We recommend installing ‘Tempest Filters’ to prevent eavesdropping and to provide surge protection.
